History of the Shumway neighborhood

The Shumway Neighborhood is conveniently located near downtown and adjacent to the hip Uptown Village. This area became part of an officially-recognized Vancouver neighborhood association in 1977. Today, the Shumway Neighborhood Association is believed to be one of the oldest in the region.

The most-recognizable and historic landmark of this neighborhood is the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics (VSAA). This building was originally Shumway Junior High and was constructed in 1929. 

The city named the school after Charles Shumway, who had just moved to the area to serve as superintendent of the school. However, Charles did not think that naming the school after him was a very good idea at all.

In fact, when told that the school would be named after him, Charles responded with, “You should not have done it—really you should not.” 

Nearly a hundred years later, and now an entire neighborhood sports his name!

 

Housing in Shumway

Shumway is an up-and-coming neighborhood. Its proximity to the notoriously popular Hough neighborhood has caught the attention of homebuyers.

This neighborhood has a variety of home styles, from old Victorian houses with lots of character and adorable bungalows to newer constructions. We love how many of the streets in this neighborhood (F Street and H Street particularly) have walkable sidewalks, big trees, and nice lawns.

If you’re looking for a larger, open park, take a 3-minute drive to Leverich Park, You’ll find a playground, walking path, relaxing streams, and even a covered picnic area. There’s also a frisbee golf course.
